Creating a Data Discovery and Self-Service Analytics Model to Keep Pace with Accelerated Growth
The Challenge
A multinational holdings company that is a manufacturer of high tech test equipment for the automotive industry needed a more robust self-service analytics and data discovery solution to accommodate accelerated growth and evolving market demand. The company relied heavily on inconsistent and dated manual processes to analyze data, including numerous spreadsheets and fragmented enterprise resource planning (ERP) data. They desired a data visualization tool that provided access to data with a capability for self-service analytics, and chose Tableau as their solution to begin the journey towards consistent data and analytics. They partnered with Sendero to design and build a Tableau executive dashboard to champion better analytics capabilities and business insight through visualization of key performance indicators.
Our Approach
Sendero began by conducting on-site requirement gathering sessions with key executive and IT stakeholders. From these meetings, we:
- Defined a range of over 30 KPIs within four different business areas
- Mapped 11 data sources
- Defined key data gathering processes and owners for each KPI
After determining initial requirements, we collaborated with the IT team and business owners to gather data required from 11 data sources, including Microsoft SQL Server and Excel, and completed additional data transformation and formatting by developing and modifying SQL views and Excel files to ensure Tableau could effectively consume the data.
Our team leveraged their skills to develop 38 Tableau worksheets and used an iterative process to review and adjust the visualizations with client stakeholders. Working together effectively to compile each worksheet into a Tableau dashboard, we published the final product to Tableau Online for end-user consumption and access.
